5 reasons to intern at Genetec

Did you know that one in five interns at Genetec eventually join our company as full-time employees? In 2018, we welcomed 67 interns for the summer session. Thanks to our long-standing relationships with 9 universities in Quebec, our internship program demonstrates that students do not need to leave the province to build the career of their dreams.

When Pierre Racz founded Genetec in 1997, he did so with the help of two interns from the Université de Sherbrooke. That decision would lay the foundation for our company’s culture and help shape it into an industry leader in IP-based security solutions.

You might be wondering just what an internship at Genetec looks like? What other benefits should interns expect from us? Listed below are five more reasons why students should choose Genetec for their next internship.

Interns are valued employees

We take great pride in the accomplishments of our interns, which is why we make sure they get the same opportunities and hands-on experience as our full-time employees. In fact, many of them return for a 2nd or 3rd internship in different teams to continue learning new skills. All the interns at Genetec integrate into teams that have very clear mandates and work on features that directly affect our clients, including major governments, large global enterprises, and high-value sites.

Education is an essential feature of our program and interns are encouraged to learn as many technologies as they want during their time with us. Not only will they have the chance to develop object-oriented programming in C#, web services, and Cloud technologies, interns often work with different teams throughout their placement.

What’s more, our interns have access to many of the same perks our employees enjoy. Need a quick bite to eat? Join us at our on-site bistro for delicious healthy meals. Is yoga or boot camp your thing? Enroll in one of the many classes offered at our private gym. Daily deliveries of fresh fruit, as well as regular health and wellness workshops, are also available to everyone working out of our offices.

Dedicated support

One of the unique aspects of our internship program is the specialized support we offer our interns. On day one, all new interns take part in an orientation session, meet their managers, and have lunch with their new teams — and that is just the beginning.

Unlike most other companies, we have two dedicated human resources employees who manage our internship program. They are constantly collecting feedback from our interns through regular check-ins, surveys, and exit interviews. All the comments they receive help us evaluate our program and implement changes in future sessions. In addition, our employees meet with university coordinators and managers to determine if interns are making the most out of their time at Genetec.

“The best part of the job is watching their development as they go from intern to permanent employee. Throughout their entire internship, we make sure that they have every opportunity to be successful and provide them with an experience that makes Genetec a must for every student.  Our team is very excited about the bright future of our internship program and what's still to come!” says Mitchell Posesorsky, Talent Specialist for University Relations at Genetec.

Campus culture

Thanks to our location in the Montreal Technoparc, our internship program is ideal for anyone who is seeking a higher quality of life in the workplace. The green spaces that surround our three buildings include biking, jogging and walking paths for those beautiful summer days. Interns can also join our office sports teams for some friendly competition.

Developers work side-by-side to create innovative solutions for our clients and have dedicated spaces to hold scrum meetings. Free parking is also available at all our sites.

All of these advantages create a campus environment where our interns have everything they need for their workday. The result is a culture that encourages communication, growth, and development.

A well-established program

One of our core values is to ensure our employees and interns take pleasure in coming to work. It's one of the reasons why we have been named a Montreal Top Employer for 12 years running and our internship program has received numerous awards such as the Top 50 Employer Award from École de Technologie Supérieure (ETS) and Internship of the Year from The Polytechnique Montreal.

We take every opportunity we can to make Genetec a fun and dynamic place to work. At our offices, interns can take time to unwind when they need to take a break by playing their favorite video game. They can also get to know each other over an evening of laser tag and mini-golf, as well as at other organized events.

Interns from the fall session also attend our company’s year-end party— an incredible 1,000+ person event. Last year's party invited everyone to an enchanted land that featured mystical characters, an indoor igloo and a forest of illuminated, snow-covered fir trees. It was a night to remember!

All these activities culminate in a cohort of interns that are close together and able to lean on each other for advice, support, and encouragement.

It is in our DNA

Mathieu Bisaillon remembers how excited he felt when Pierre hired him as an intern in 1997. Now the Director of our Stratocast Product Group, he recalls his strong desire to join Genetec because of its commitment to developing innovative and cutting-edge solutions.

“What I enjoyed most as an intern was the fact that everyone was working in close proximity to one another and that we were developing incredibly exciting technologies,” Mathieu says. “Of all the internships I did as a student, my two placements at Genetec were the ones where I learned the most.”
