With every release of a new AutoVu Sharp ANPR camera, we run a series of performance and stress tests to make sure newer revisions are better than previous generations. Last summer, with all the improvements we made to the AutoVu SharpX ANPR camera, we wanted to test the limits of this device and to recognize the speeds at which this license plate recognition (LPR) or automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera was able to capture license plate reads.
We did a few tests which included driving two cars in opposite directions on isolated roads but we found that due to the limit of the road and the drivers, the system was always able to capture the license plates. As a result, we decided to rent a private race track for a full day and perform a series of tests. , So, to accomplish our objectives, we went to Sanair Speedway, a training track used by the Quebec Provincial Police (SQ).
To perform our speed tests, we hired a group of amateur drivers with modified cars. Here are the results:
The first car was a modified Nissan 350Z. Unfortunately, this car broke down during the first series of tests. We then used our backup car, a Honda S2000 with V8 Corvette Engine, which ended up being faster than the Nissan.

Prior to this, we were able to confirm an upper limit for reading a plate at over 200 mph. This can be attributed to several technical factors including a superior ANPR camera resolution of 1024x946, a shutter speed of 30fps, and dynamic adaptive exposure control.
We don't see the breaking point on this video clip, but we finally hit a differential breaking speed of ~260 mph where we finally missed the plate. We concluded the tests at this point as the brakes of the Dodge Charger overheated and it was getting dangerous trying to stop the vehicle at the end of the racetrack.
