Behind the scenes at a modern icon For more than 150 years, Bloomingdale's set the bar for the American shopping experience. As one of the world's leading department stores, it even became one of New York's most visited attractions. Just how is this retail institution adapting to a changing marketplace? Case study Bloomingdale's is New York City's flagship department store. Stocking everything from handbags to homeware, it is what Selfridges is to London, Galeries Lafayette is to Paris, and Isetan is to Tokyo. Back in 1872, when brothers Joseph and Lyman Bloomingdale opened the Great East Side Bazaar, they created a new type of store. At a time when retailers tended to specialize in just one type of garment, it was a unique proposition. e Bloomingdale brothers imported European skirts, corsets, fancy goods, and gentlemen's furnishings and, in doing so, laid the foundations for the Bloomingdale's department store of 1929 that covered an entire New York City block. A store like no other Today, the art deco Lexington Avenue store is one of the most recognizable buildings in the city and, at its peak, was second only to the Statue of Liberty as the city's most visited attraction. Operating primarily on America's East and West coasts, Bloomingdale's now has 38 stores and 16 outlets. Such an unprecedented period of growth meant that updating the organization's legacy systems was always likely to pose significant challenges.
