Security conversations with Otis, the world's leading supplier of people-moving products "Whether a consultant or engineer is modernizing an existing building or working on a new-build scenario, they have the freedom to truly customize the system to meet the organization's needs. This means not only ensuring that the employee and visitor experience is streamlined and efficient, but also implementing specific security measures which keep everyone safe. " Q: How are organizations managing employees and visitors by leveraging Otis CompassPlus? A: With Otis CompassPlus, managing employees and visitors is a seamless task. They enter the building, approach the terminal, select their floor, and go. From a security perspective, organizations also have better control over who can go where and at what time through the integration with Security Center. Traditional card readers within elevators are usually dry contacts, which provide 'yes' or 'no' results when a card is presented. When CompassPlus is integrated with Security Center, access control credentials are validated using built-in card readers at the terminal. So, we're moving beyond dry contacts and providing a more advanced and thorough method of validating user credentials at the software level. This means owners and tenants can better control what floors are off-limits to specific cardholders, set unique access control privileges according to business opening hours or job functions, and even automate advanced CompassPlus features such as VIP express runs, specific car assignments, or providing extra space in the cab. Furthermore, Otis CompassPlus can integrate with turnstiles to extend security to the perimeter of a building. Or, owners can add external readers such as biometric readers or barcode scanners to the terminal for added levels of security. Q: What makes the Otis CompassPlus and Genetec Security Center integration unique? A: The main thing is that the credential validation and the destination management are software-based. This allows for much more flexibility in how a building owner or tenant manages user credentials or how they might evolve their operations. For instance, as years go by, changes in a building are sure to come up. Some building owners might have tenants that need more floor space or larger tenants that move in. Or perhaps, the security needs of an existing tenant change under new management. With a software-based solution, all these changes are easier to accommodate. You're not having to rip out or rewire existing readers. You can simply update the configuration of the system, making changes to cardholders and rules. This is critical because it saves organizations money, time, and minimizes disruption to other building tenants. Genetec did the full protocol integration. Using Security Center, customers have access to the full range of security features and capabilities within CompassPlus. The level of customization in terms of credential profiles, system settings, transmission of data, reader types, and visitor management capabilities provide for maximum configuration options. Q: What does this joint solution mean for customers and how is this a good thing for consultants/engineers? A: Whether a consultant or engineer is modernizing an existing building or working on a new-build scenario, they have the freedom to truly customize the system to meet the organization's needs. This means not only ensuring that the employee and visitor experience is streamlined and efficient, but also implementing specific security measures which keep everyone safe. There is also much more flexibility in how the destination management and security system can evolve over time since it's all software-based. Consultants and engineers can essentially offer their customers a joint solution that benefits them today and evolves with them in the future.
