4 Montreal is the most populous city in Quebec, Canada and the second most populous municipality in Canada. Originally called Ville-Marie, or "City of Mary," it is named after Mount Royal, the triple- peaked hill in the heart of the city. Interesting facts about Montreal — Montreal is the second largest French-speaking city in the world, after Paris. However, most Montrealers – especially in the downtown core – are bilingual. French is the city's official language and is the language spoken at home by 47% of the population of the city, followed by English at 13% and 40% other languages — During the summer, the area Quartier des Spectacles hosts outdoor festivals almost weekly, such as Just for Laughs, the International Jazz Festival, and the Francofolies (dedicated to Francophone music). — Over 85% of the world's maple syrup comes from the province of Quebec and items such as maple sugar, maple cookies, maple butter, and maple candy, are Montreal's specialties.
