Security conversations with George Barlow Brown, IT Manager at the New Orleans Real-Time Crime Center "We endeavor to do as much case work-up for detectives as possible, so they can spend their time finding suspects and closing these cases. " Q: How is the RTCC using the Genetec video system? A: If we have a live event and something is unfolding, we'll send a notification to dispatch, telling them that we have relevant video. The responding officer might indicate that they're interested in said video. Our team will then call the officer over the radio and describe what happened and what's unfolding. Our staff would also bookmark and upload the video to a central repository for the officer to access later. If an investigation is underway, the detective would call us on the radio, sometimes directly from the scene. They might say 'I'm standing under the camera at X and X intersection and would like to know if this camera was pointed here at 3 am'. Our staff would do a quick search, confirm if there is evidence, and then proceed to send the video over to the officer. Our team might also describe the events to the officer, so they know exactly what happened. We endeavor to do as much case work-up for detectives as possible, so they can spend their time finding suspects and closing these cases. Other than that, we use the system to oversee big city events like Mardi Gras and New Year's Eve. We also act as a backup emergency operations center for the city of New Orleans and we use public safety cameras to monitor other events such as flooding. For example, we're able to provide video footage to the Sewage and Water Board, so they can determine the rate at which an intersection floods. We also have motion-detection alarms set up on cameras facing some known illegal dumping sites. This helps us immediately know when someone dumps something at these locations. We can then pro-actively notify the Sanitation Department so they can collect debris before other garbage piles up. Q: What's next for the RTCC in New Orleans? A: The RTCC isn't currently funded for the expansion of our security platform beyond our initial investment. That said, it's my intention to double the public safety camera count by leveraging the Federation feature in Security Center. To do that, we'll be expanding our public-private partnership initiative called SafeCam. SafeCam is a registry of all the public-facing cameras located in the city for police officers. By visiting SafeCamNOLA.com, businesses can pro-actively get involved and express interest in sharing their camera feeds with the RTCC. © Genetec Inc., 2019.
