A video management system (VMS) is a software that allows a user to record and stream live videos from multiple cameras at the same time. The VMS can run on a server or an NVR/DVR recorder. Recorder-based systems record and stream video but typically do not incorporate certain advanced capabilities like video analytics or access control systems. Server-based systems record and stream video, and also offer access control, license plate recognition, analytics, dynamic maps and other advanced modules and capabilities on the same server.
