State of Physical Security 2020 Genetec Inc. 4 Executive summary Physical security has always been focused on the safety and security of people moving through buildings and spaces, but in 2020 this took on a whole new level of importance. As a result of the global pandemic, physical security departments have become the front line in helping secure the health and well-being of our communities – while continuing to secure facilities and evolve to a new way of working. Physical security in a global health crisis As the need for social distancing and contact tracing has spread throughout societies around the world, physical security departments have worked the front lines and deployed solutions to keep facilities and people safe. 48% are leveraging existing technology to address new challenges. A worldwide look at physical security As much as we are all unique, physical security practices around the world don't look that different, with similar technology and project priorities worldwide – pre- and post-pandemic. The outlook for 2021 will continue to be challenging as we wait to get back to normal but 48% report flat to increasing budgets moving into the new year. A near-term view of technology and cybersecurity As cybercrime continues to increase and remote work has created more technology challenges, the physical security industry remains behind in its approach to address cyber threats and its understanding of the potential business and cybersecurity merits of cloud-based technology. 1 3 2 In this research, we report on the thoughts of more than 1,000 physical security professionals and we take a closer look at how they are reacting to the threat of COVID-19.
