"Security systems don't generate profit and the added cost of maintenance for the devices is putting people off the move to digital, but these teams do forget that these devices are there to protect the money you make." Steve Green agrees that the cost/ benefit of the system needs to be properly understood. He adds, "People don't always consider the consequences ahead of time. Can you afford for this to go wrong? We're getting to the point where we can manage security on a unified platform. If you manage things through one platform, it becomes cheaper, and people will want to use it because it maximises what can be achieved from a single place." Conclusion Growing automation and the rise of digital technologies will have an impact on the nature of our energy and utilities infrastructure. Security teams need to embrace new technologies whilst understanding their own vulnerabilities. With a more complex estate to manage and an increase in risks and threats, a unified view of your security systems will pay dividends in terms of confidence, performance and reliability within critical national infrastructure. Beyond IoT, digital transformation is driving the move to security as a service, as Steve Green, Business Development Manager at Genetec, comments, "Cloud-hosted services means that you don't need to deploy as much hardware on the remote side. When all you have is the access control hardware, there are less devices that are at threat from cyber-attacks. " Reducing the cyber risk Concentrating on cyber security best practice - Zero Trust needs to be the new security mantra says Steve Green. Security teams should not trust any request for access and they should be authenticating everything. Even when they have proved who they are, access should be dynamically limited to what they need to do their work. Paul Wood also sees the value of introducing a security mindset for all staff. He comments, "A commitment to protection has to come from high-level management. Don't take for granted that your employees are already doing the basics. Discourage obvious passwords, don't leave notebooks lying around the office or walk away from machines without locking them."
