24 Taxes and tips What is the sales tax in Paris? Goods and services in France are taxed at a value-added tax rate (VAT) of 20%. This rate is applied to most good and services sold for consumption. Note that taxes in France are included in the price of the items you buy, rather than being calculated at check-out. Do I need to tip? Generally, tips are not necessary or expected. However, if you feel that your service was exceptional, feel free to add tip. Restaurants do not usually add tip when processing payments by credit card, so expect to tip in cash if you choose to do so.
