Key storage considerations for implementing a city-center video surveillance program

City SurveillanceIn 2013, there were 49 million surveillance cameras shipped worldwide.  By 2017, that number is expected to grow to over 80 million.  There is no question, surveillance projects are growing by leaps and bounds in cities across the world.  Local governments see the value that comes from city wide surveillance deployments however the question arises-How can all that video be effectively managed , shared and maintained for a multiple constituents with varying demands?

One of the most crucial aspects of a video surveillance system that is often an afterthought is storage utilization and retention.   By 2017, industry estimates place the capacity of storage for surveillance video at close to 5 exabytes and city-wide surveillance projects will account for roughly 25% of that number.  When implementing a unified video management software approach like Genetec's Security Center, municipalities need to give careful consideration to current and future storage requirements without over-provisioning, or buying too much storage up front rather than scaling out once an additional storage need becomes necessary.  The storage solution must be flexible enough to grow on demand and have the ability to record video streams without interruption despite the inevitability of disk or server failure and offer safeguards to ensure stored video will be protected from accidental deletion and data corruption.

City-wide video surveillance is about managing growth.  Genetec Security Center and EMC Isilon are an ideal solution for city center deployments that require future proof scalability and performance.
