As a Genetec technical trainer, I've been asked this question several times in the past by my participants. Security Center has always been very well received, with many participants commenting on the ease of installation and configuration. As well, advanced features of our unified platform, such as Video Trickling, have been of interest. That said, I wanted to share a topic that my groups found most helpful: configuring multiple streams.
Many who attended my courses had experience working with other video applications without multi-streaming support, having to cope with a single quality and resolution for recording and live viewing (or at best, with no more than these two options). The technology in new IP cameras has progressed so much in recent years that users now expect to be able to configure and assign their video streams independently & optimally. Security Center's ability allows for flexible configuration and management of multiple streams such as live, recording, remote, as well as high and low resolution.
Security Center facilitates the configuration of all video streams available on cameras directly through the administration tool (Config Tool). When you open a task and select a video camera, you can see the video settings for all video streams and configuration options in one place. Here's what you can do:
- Use the "Live Stream" to set the ideal quality for live video. This is the quality that operators will use on a daily basis to view cameras
- Set and use additional video streams for recording ("Recording Stream"), or other purposes. This quality of additional streams can be the same or different from the live stream. Security Center is very flexible and provides several options to adjust the properties of each stream
The following video configurations are also supported, providing users of Security Center with more options:
- Leveraging a camera's ability to generate additional video streams to configure (if available) a "Remote Stream." We know that there are many facilities with remote clients connected over a network with limited bandwidth, or that require lower quality video. In Security Center, we are not forced to use the live video quality for these clients. By configuring a stream with lower quality or resolution, Security Desk (the application used for monitoring & reporting), can be configured to obtain the optimal video stream for each scenario.
- Why send a high-resolution video stream to a video tile or monitor without as many lines of resolution? Good question! When configuring the "Low Resolution" and the "High Resolution" streams, Security Desk gains the ability to intelligently switch between up to 3 streams (Low, Live, and High), selecting the stream that best fits the display. For example, if you see an activity on a small tile that you wish to view more closely, you can simply double-click on the tile. Security Desk will respond by displaying the camera in full-screen mode and will switch to a higher resolution stream for optimal quality. When reverting back to a smaller tile, the stream is also switched back to the original quality to save on resources. While this automatic stream selection can reduce traffic on the network, it can also dramatically reduce the processing power used by the client machine to display multiple cameras.
As we can see, understanding Security Center's features can help achieve a much better application experience for our customers.
