An edge device is the starting point of any VMS. It is the hardware that connects to a LAN or a WAN (or the
Internet) to exchange data with users and other devices. In our case, we talk mostly about cameras.

Metadata is the data used to describe another piece of data. Motion detection, intruder detection, people
counter, and heat spots create metadata to describe the video footage. This makes it easier for searching. In
video surveillance, cameras, VMS or 3

party software can generate metadata.
